For example, some women refuse visits from attorneys or family members out of embarrassment about bleeding through clothing, former inmates told Maryland lawmakers at a bill hearing last month. She said that after her release in 2015, she suffered toxic shock syndrome and needed an emergency hysterectomy. As a result of the announcement, the legislation did not advance. "So, it’s something that’s coming to a town near you."There was a lot of surprise that this was being used as a keep-them-under-the-thumb sort of thing, and so that was kind of the uproar," said Del Pamela Queen, a Democrat who sponsored one of the measures."Amy Fettig, deputy director for the American Civil Liberties Union’s National Prison Project, says the issue has emerged in the past year as part of a larger conversation about women in prison that simply wasn’t happening five to 10 years ago.

"As an example, Fettig cited a recent episode of "Orange is the New Black," a Netflix program about a woman’s prison, that focused on the lack of tampon access in prison. The project works to ensure the nation’s prisons, jails and detention centres comply with the Constitution and international human rights principles. In 2016, New York became the nation’s first city to require free tampons and sanitary pads in correctional facilities, public schools and homeless shelters. In Maryland, lawmakers said they were shocked to hear former inmates describe the severity of a problem that undermines inmates’ health and dignity. "I think it’s also because of the larger China Rubber ProductsMeToo movement and awareness about women’s status in this country and how far we still have to go, as well as popular culture."Toxic shock, emergency hysterectomies — it runs the gamut of how women are forced to pay for, with their very health, our bad policies and our inattention to the gender disparities that exist within our system," Haven said. It was a significant development, because it gave the requirement the force of law.In Nebraska, corrections officials avoided the legislative process in January by announcing that generic tampons and pads would be provided for free and that it would charge inmates only for name-brand supplies.Arizona’s corrections department announced in February, it would immediately triple the number of free sanitary napkins it automatically provides each month to female inmates to head off a proposal to provide unlimited free tampons, pads and other feminine hygiene products.

The measures are nearly identical, so supporters don’t see an impediment to a final vote needed by each chamber to send the legislation to Guv Larry Hogan. In Maryland, both chambers passed legislation on March 1 to put required free access to menstrual products into law."Every state needs to consider protecting its women behind bars in a more robust manner, and certainly ensuring that health and dignity are not sacrificed at the prison door," Fettig said."Even though women have been the largest increasing portion of the criminal justice system for two decades, they still are a relatively small portion compared to men, and so their needs and situations have been largely ignored, both in our criminal justice system and by the public at large, and that’s finally beginning to change because of the work # of advocacy groups," Fettig said.In 2014, the ACLU of Michigan drew attention to the issue by filing a lawsuit on behalf of inmates at the Muskegon County Jail who did not have adequate access to menstrual supplies, raising awareness among advocates around the country.

In addition to health risks, former inmates also say the resulting indignities have other impacts.Virginia legislators passed a measure early this month.. Federal legislation titled the Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act has highlighted the issue."I think that there is a wave, and I think there’s a lot of attention that’s being paid now to women, period — whether that’s #MeToo, whether that’s Time’s Up," the anti-sexual harassment movement in Hollywood, said Monica Cooper, a former inmate who is the co-founder of the Maryland Justice Project, an advocacy group that focuses on the effects of the criminal justice system on women.Despite the rising attention, Fettig said much work remains.Annapolis: Kimberly Haven couldn’t get the feminine hygiene products she needed in Maryland’s only prison for women while serving a 15-month sentence, so she made her own using toilet paper. Former inmates, including Haven and Cooper, testified that correctional officers have withheld the products to control inmates as part of an officer-prisoner power dynamic.Fuelled in part by the national #MeToo movement, state legislatures around the country — as well as corrections officials and the federal government — are working to supply prisons and jails with adequate feminine hygiene products, train staff, and raise awareness of the long-time, widespread issue. Lawmakers in Alabama, Arizona, and Connecticut have introduced bills. The Federal Bureau of Prisons in August issued a memo mandating that feminine hygiene products be available to all female inmates in federal institutions at no cost. In Colorado in 2017, lawmakers included a provision in the state’s budget bill to provide incarcerated women with free access to tampons

The word "cosmetics" mainly implied make-up items. There are often foreign buyers to meet, or media interviews. It has been a long journey for India’s beauty industry’s best-known impresario Shahnaz Husain. Superficial beauty treatments and hairstyling were "treats" women went in for. I was the first Indian to open a Shahnaz Ayurveda Aesthetic Clinic on London’s Harley Street. Listening to music, the soft melodies of ghazals, in subdued lighting, is also something I love doing. Q: Finally, what is a day in the life of Shahnaz Husain like What are your preoccupations A: I always wish there were more than 24 hours to a day. Also on the cards are treatment and de-stress centres along with spas in hospitals "where people going through treatment can relax and rejuvenate themselves". It is estimated that the size of the beauty products business in India is around Rs 5,000 crores. For others, a good life may be living for 100 years, but I live a lifetime between the rising and setting of the sun.

Looking back at the journey of well over four decades, what would you attribute the success of Shahnaz Husain Herbals to A: One of the most important factors responsible for our growth and success is that I chose Ayurvedic care and cure. There was hardly any awareness of the potential dangers of chemical treatments and of other detrimental effects on beauty, like exposure to UV rays and environmental pollutants.Q: With more and more products flooding the market, do you ever have a sense of competition A: What is truly unique is that "Shahnaz Husain" is not a faceless brand name or corporate. Another major development is that branding has become important in the Indian beauty industry.

I have recently been invited to lecture at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, on how I built a brand without commercial advertising and publicity. During my training in London in cosmetics therapy, I came across instances of damage caused by chemical ingredients and I was determined to find a natural alternative. As I am involved in each and every aspect of my enterprise, I have an extremely busy schedule every day. Q: Do you think the cosmetics industry in India is poised for great leaps in the years to come with major cosmetic brands making their presence felt A: The beauty industry in India continues to thrive, with a tremendous potential for growth. Only some basic beauty products like cold cream and shampoo were available on cosmetics store shelves. At that time, the beauty industry in India, including the beauty services industry, was largely unorganised and fragmented. Scientific techniques and modern beauty concepts have also influenced products.. After a hard day’s work, I love going to Barista for coffee. For over 40 decades, the cosmetics czarina has been at the forefront of Ayurvedic "care and cure" that has inevitably made her a household name. But that and everything she has done thus far has just been a milestone: In the fifth decade of her journey, Shahnaz Husain has many things up her sleeve. My day includes discussions with different departments, from production, international expansion, public relations, to packaging and promotions.

How important are innovation and product evaluation for your products’ long-term success A: We have remained a dynamic organisation due to product innovation. As for product evaluation, our products are not only laboratory tested, but also clinically tested in actual user conditions in the chain of Shahnaz salons. Herbal beauty care, as we know it today, did not exist. Beauty companies concentrate on building up brand loyalty and brand identity through innovative promotions and value-added offers. She plans to set up beauty schools globally "to impart training in skin and hair problems with the powerful magic of herbs and plant power". Product innovation has gone to new heights, especially in terms of anti-ageing or age control treatments and products. Our commitment to research and development and the launch of highly innovative formulations from time to time, are some of the reasons why the brand has developed so strongly. According to Assocham, if we take the beauty salon and spa service industries into consideration, it is said to be much higher, over Rs 10,000 crores.Q: How has the cosmetics industry in India evolved over the last four decades What do you think have been the major breakthroughs for the industry A: Four decades ago, when I started my career, beauty treatments were mainly "colour and cover". Our future plans include concentrated international branding, strengthening and widening our global chain of franchise ventures and appointing distributors in unrepresented new markets. That is when the "Back to Nature" movement was starting in the West. We will be taking Ayurveda and Brand India to more countries within the next year.

In the fifth decade, what are going to be the Shahnaz Husain Herbals’ major strategies as far as expansion and outreach are concerned A: We are expanding our footprints across the globe. On March 8, to commemorate the International Women’s Day, Husain announced the launch of Nari Vikas Movement for women empowerment and upliftment of rural women by setting aside an amount of `11 crores by adopting 11 villages on an immediate basis. I was exceptionally fortunate, because when the world was looking for a natural alternative, I was already there and established. We also plan to open treatment and de-stress centres along with spas in hospitals where people going through treatment can relax and rejuvenate themselves. We also plan to set up Beauty schools globally to impart training on skin and hair problems with the powerful magic of herbs and plant power. It is to double by 2014. The image that is foremost in the mind of clients and consumers is that of a real, answerable person, who is herself trained in cosmetology and cosmetics therapy. Many kinds of beauty products, for varied purposes, are now available, even based on individual skin type, from sunscreens and moisturisers, to specialised cleansers, toners, astringents, scrubs, masks, serums, shampoos, conditioners, hair tonics, hair serums and so on

"The thumb rule is if you sell you dont advise, if you advise you dont sell..Nearly 100 firms, both domestic and foreign, have evinced interest in partnering the government-promoted IPPB.Asked when the IPPB would be ready to sell third party products, Singh said "by first quarter of calendar year 2018 it should be there". We basically will provide a platform and the idea is to open it to everyone on a non-exclusive basis," he said.Singh said the IPPB will curate third party products before selling it so as to ensure that it is simple for customers. The bank had launched its pilot project with a branch each in Raipur and Ranchi on January 30 this year.In an interview to PTI, Singh said that IPPB will start full fledged operations in every district of the country by September 2017. You cannot both advise and sell, it is a conflict of interest," Singh said."We will sell third party products, but it is a question of biting as much as I can chew."I dont want to get into selection bias or exclusive relationships.

India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) will start selling mutual funds and insurance products of other companies by early 2018 and is open only to "non- exclusive" tie-ups, its Chief Executive A P Singh has said. We will basically be selling, we wont be advising. As many as 100 entities including IDBI Bank, HSBC, Axis Bank, Deutsche Bank, Barclays Bank, Citibank, SBI and LIC have evinced interest in partnering with IPPB for various functions given the unmatched rural reach India Post has.As part of its expansion drive, IPPB plans to open 650 new branches by September. The list of insurance companies which have approached the payments bank include HDFC Life, ICICI Prudential, Max Life Insurance and Bajaj Allianz Life.As per RBI norms, Payments banks have to focus on providing basic financial services, including social security and utility bill payments, remittance functions, and can mobilise deposits of up to Rs 1 lakh.55 lakh post offices and the new branches will be set up within the them.

He said IPPBs sales force would not advise customers on third wholesale Rubber Products party products and instead offer just a table depicting the returns that a simple group term insurance product or an Index Mutual Fund would offer to a customer. Also, there would not be any training of staff necessary as no individual product of any specific company is to be sold.Asked about plans to diversify and sell third party products through its platform, Singh said he is looking at offering only those products which customers can easily understand. This infrastructure must remain open for everyone," Singh said. Also, they can distribute insurance, mutual funds and pension products, and act as business correspondent for other banks for credit products. The Postal Department at present has a network of 1. I am clear that I am built by public money, I am offering a public platform and I dont want to appropriate the Post Office exclusively for a particular company

I like to call myself as "scientist yogi or sanyasi" as I believe in vedic life science, where everything is established by facts.By joining hands with such units, we will be making a group of small scale units as per our objectives to bring in prosperity, charity , love and compassion for all. Secondly, the government must ensure a complete ban on uses of participatory or promissory note route and lastly by changing banking secrecy law which is helping foreign banks to easily siphon off black money from the country. You think MNCs are responsible for hurting India’s financial independence? The East India Company came and established a colony of British empire and now these MNCs are coming and working for establishing economic colony. Some people or groups with vested interests are spreading these baseless rumours. Why do you target MNCs?These MNCs are taking away about Rs 50 lakh crores annually as royalty money to their respective countries. Meanwhile, we have asked all stores (mainly in far flung areas) to adopt cashless and digital transaction. Of the total black money, 85 per cent is internal against which the union government has acted in a way of demonetisation and 15 per cent is stashed away which is called cross-border black money. Patanjali is coming with several new products.

It is a huge task and our only objective behind it is development and prosperity of our country. About 25 years ago, we started on a very small scale with an aim of breaking the dominance of multinational companies. We are roping in youngsters as yoga pracharaks and giving stipends to them. Only some work was awarded on contract to others, a practice followed by MNCs and others in India and rest of the world. You speak of financial independence of India. The corrupt should not be spared. There was some confusion among people in the initial days due to regular changes in guidelines regarding withdrawals and other deposit rules which were changed frequently. In the next five years, our target is to provide direct and indirect employment to five crore farmers. There are four steps, which required achieving the objective to clean black money from the country. Before 2014 general election you talked about bringing back Rs 15 lakh crores of black money stashed abroad. To keep a check on crossborder black money, government must take three steps. First, the government must make declarations of names of ultimate beneficiaries or ownership of FDIs, as Rs 20 lakh crore of black money brought in as FDI has come through Mauritius route under fake names.

I am an unpaid brand ambassador and Acharya Balkrishna is an unpaid CEO, MD and shareholder of the company, with a model of no dividend or no profit sharing. To achieve our objective of economic freedom for the country from MNCs, we have made the Patanjali a "multi-dimensional brand" where "desh ka paisa desh mai (Country’s money for country’s development)".. We are simply working on the works of rishi Patanjali by spreading his adhyatyamik (spirituality) with adhunikta (modernity) along with prosperity, science and technology. The United States or British citizens are proud of their country.Did demonetisation affect Patanjali’s business? It did not have any effect on our business. How did this idea of Patanjali came to your mind?Patanjali is named after the tallest yoga guru Maharashi Patanjali. We have provided one lakh direct employments and indirect employment opportunity to one crore farmers. MNCs have no commitment towards India. There are some initial problems, which are procedural in nature. And people will have to change their habits and adopt digital transactions. Patanjali is working for development, economic prosperity that can help in nation-building. Soon Patanjali will be entering in textiles and puja samaghri.

Our nationality is not a threat to others or anyone and we are not disrespecting others. People have created a pakhand (hypocrisy) with vested interest in the name of religion. The 100 per cent profit earned by the Patanjali is used for charity to provide world-class quality and affordable products. What is future expansion plan for pan-India presence of Patanjali? For pan-India presence, we are aggressively expanding our network in South India, specially in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Kerala. In an interview to Shashi Bhushan, Baba Ramdev says that he is confident that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also act against cross-border black money. We are planning 50 manufacturing units and we will ensure there is a minimum of one unit in each state of the country. This should have been avoided. Why?The term "Scientist Baba" is used by people and coined by me as I do not believe in superstitions. We have not fully succeeded but we have definitely achieved a substantial success in our objective to achieve economic freedom for the country. By ensuring all the four measures together we will end the menace of black money from the country. Now you stopped talking about black money stashed offshore?First of all, we must understand the economy of black money. Implementing these three steps will make way for action against cross border black money. Today MNCs like Unilever, Coca Cola, Nestle, P&G have their presence in all sectors from FMCG to textiles and automobiles. What are the new products or sector Patanjali is offering in future? We have recently launched "Shishu Care" (baby care) products and energy drink "power vita" and we are getting a good response. We are increasing our capacity and within one year, power vita will take over other energy drinks like Bournvita, Horlicks and others. We are also starting work in dairy products having units in Maharastra.Questions are raised about quality of your products and there are also allegation that Patnajali’s products are repackaged or manufactured somewhere else?I must commit to consumers that 99 per cent of Patanjali’s products are manufactured in-house. Patanjali is using its 100 per cent profit for charity and we are simply asking MNCs to invest 20 to 30 per cent of their profits in India itself.

Then, the taxman whose role will be important and crucial from January 1 next year must ensure that not a single honest man is harassed. Now we are engaging 1,000 new distributors in these states and maximum are in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It is a major step towards bringing economic transparency, reforms, responsibility and accountability in the country. For expansion, we are also joining hands with small units that make good quality products but are unable to build it as a brand. Our schools, to be opened in every district of South India, will provide world-class modern education along spiritual and yoga education at nominal cost. You have often called yourself as a "scientist baba". Patanjali is also opening 1,000 new stores in South India. How do you look at demonetisation? Do you think it’ll benefit India?Demonetisation is a big, brave and historic decision taken by the government. First banking system should be made transparent. Second, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) should behave responsibly.Baba Ramdev, yoga guru, says that in the fight against black money, the government has started acting and will take more steps in future. MNCs are Rubber seal Suppliers coming to India only to make profit and they have no commitment towards India. At least, the government has started acting against black money and I am confident Narendra Modi will also act against black money stashed abroad. Why Patanjali and its products are connected to patriotism and nationalism? Why Patanjali and its products should not be connected to nationalism or patriotism? Every Indian must be proud of his or her country.Do you believe there is lack of preparation, which lead to procedural problems? There are some problems and government has rectified it from time to time. We never compromise on quality of products and we sell only those products which I personally use. Government started acting against internally circulated black money. In the next five years, five mega food parks will be operational and our production capacity will be increased to one lakh crore. As social responsibility, Patanjali is opening university and schools in South India. In a fight against black money, the government has taken a step and will do more in future as well. It is a big goal and we can achieve it. It is very difficult to change ones hobby, habits and practice like use of cash transactions as it is a challenging job
